New York CNN —It would be an understatement to say that it’s been a good year for Nvidia. The California-based chipmaking giant has seen its shares soar about 220% this year, making it the top performing S&P 500 stock in 2023. What’s happening: Just before Thanksgiving, Nvidia crushed doubts that its star was fading by reporting gangbuster third quarter earnings. By Sosnick’s count, Nvidia executives mentioned AI at least 70 times on their most recent earnings call. Historically, Nvidia has had hard falls after missteps — between 2021 and 2022, shares of the stock fell by 66%.

Emad Mostaque, the CEO of Stability AI, thinks the tech will truly take off next year. Think again: the AI hype cycle is just getting started — at least in the view of one top expert. But that's going to be far, far greater if Mostaque is right: he estimates 50% of all CEOs will make mention of AI by next year. Bank of America reviewed 30 stocks to determine which ones will benefit from AI software demand. But Bank of America expects the global AI market to reach $900 billion by 2026, up from just under $600 billion this year. A large chunk of that growth will come from the AI software sector at $787 billion. A May 30 note from Bank of America listed the top-three factors that lend themselves to success within the sector. Salesforce shares surged 12% on Thursday and headed for their biggest single-day rally since August 2020, after the cloud software vendor issued earnings and guidance that trounced analysts' estimates. After the close of regular trading on Wednesday, Salesforce reported fiscal fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.68 per share, 23% higher than the consensus among analysts polled by Refinitiv. Alongside the earnings report, Salesforce said it's working with Bain on a business review, and the company announced the elimination of the board's committee on mergers and acquisitions. Citi is also sounding a cautious tone on the sector, calling 2023 a "year of dichotomy in software." Stock picks CNBC Pro had a look at Wall Street research to find the banks' top stock picks to play the software sector. The bank said the company's already "healthy" operating margins could grow about 20%. Goldman also likes tax technology software firm Vertex for its potential to "drive higher cloud margins over time." German software firm SAP is one of Bank of America 's top picks in European software.

The tech sector was hit hard last year as worries about economic weakness and the Federal Reserve's aggressive rate hike path to tame inflation weighed on companies. In particular, rising interest rates hurt the present value of the future stream of earnings for tech stocks. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK), a fund that corresponds with the tech sector of the S & P 500, dropped 28% in 2022. Still, there are some bright spots in the sector where Wall Street analysts see growth ahead. The stock gained nearly 45% in 2022 and could rise another 43% this year, according to the consensus price target from Wall Street analysts.
Generative AI firms, the category that ChatGPT falls under, saw big valuations in the past year. But even before the rise of ChatGPT, the space was buzzing as generative AI companies began raising large amounts of cash from venture capital. Startups using generative AI rose eyeball-popping amounts in the past year, especially during an overall bad year for VC investments. A hot market gets even hotterInvesting in generative AI and machine learning is nothing new for VCs. Defensibility is a key concern for generative AI startups that rely on OpenAI.

BlackBerry warns of economic impact on cybersecurity business

Dec 20 (Reuters) - BlackBerry Ltd (BB.TO), said on Tuesday the sales cycles for its cybersecurity software have become longer and it expects the current macroeconomic environment to pose more challenges in the near term. The Canadian technology company said revenue from the cybersecurity business would remain flat in the first half of 2023, but grow in the latter half of the year. BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen said the cybersecurity business was regaining momentum and there's evidence that investments will drive progress towards growth next year. U.S.-listed shares of the company fell marginally in extended trading. Revenue fell 8.2% to $169 million from $184 million.
One segment of the stock market that has been particularly beaten down is the tech sector. Goldman Sachs , however, has a mixed outlook on the sector for 2023. In a note titled "Greater China Tech: Demand outlook by sub-sectors; key indicators and top picks for 2023" on Dec. 9, the bank shared its outlook and top stock picks for the various sub-sectors. Goldman's top picks in the automotive software segment include ThunderSoft, Desay and ArcSoft Corp, while the bank's top pick in the cybersecurity software segment is Beijing Venustech. Smartphones Goldman expects growth in the smartphones segment to remain flattish in 2023, driven by soft shipments in China.

Box is bucking the trend among technology names and stands to keep outperforming going forward, according to JPMorgan. Analyst Pinjalim Bora upgraded the software-as-a-service stock to overweight from neutral. The new target represents upside of 20% from Friday's close. The move follows the upgrade to neutral from underweight in March as the stock has continued to outperform the broader software sector, as measured by the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) . Growth should slow next year along with the broader software market, he said, but should still show a "double-digit" increase year over year.

Business-software companies say customers are being more cautious with their spending in response to a challenging economy, adding to the tech industry’s list of concerns. Customers for companies such as Salesforce Inc., Okta Inc. and CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. are taking longer to sign deals, and in some cases slowing their hiring plans as they try to protect their bottom lines, the software providers reported this past week. That trend has created a cloudy outlook for many in the once-booming business-software sector, which benefited from years of demand as customers looked to use the products to trim costs and maintain their businesses during the pandemic.
Investors should consider buying Intuit heading into 2023 as a defensive way of gaining exposure to the software sector, according to Mizuho. Analyst Siti Panigrahi reiterated a buy rating on Intuit after the company reported its latest quarterly results. The analyst said the company is set up to beat expectations next year after de-risking guidance for its Credit Karma and Small Business verticals. The company also lowered its fiscal 2023 guidance. The 2023 guidance for Intuit's Small Business vertical is similarly "achievable," especially as the the business outperformed in the most recent quarter, according to the note.
The S & P 500, meanwhile, is down 15.5% this year, dragged down by the communication services and information technology sectors, along with consumer discretionary. The Nasdaq is up 6% in the fourth quarter, while the S & P 500 has surged 12% in that time. But, some investors think tech's cooperation will be needed for the market to bounce back from this bear market. "[Tech stocks] have to participate, they have to move up to get a big market move," the company's co-chief investment officer said.
